2014 1st Prize Jazz: Greg Jung

greg-jungGregory Jung was born and raised in Albany, NY.  He began studying classical piano at a young age, and joined the elementary school band on clarinet, later switching to saxophone.  During his time in the Albany public school system, he was afforded the opportunity to participate in the NYSSMA music festivals and perform in the area all state wind ensemble and jazz orchestra.  Gregory also began studying with local saxophonist Keith Pray in his early high school years, and gained valuable experience sitting in with him at local venues.  In September 2010, Gregory began his first semester at the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music, where he has studied with masters like Todd Coolman, Jon Faddis, Pete Malinverni, Jon Gordon, Ralph Lalama, Gary Smulyan, Mark Vinci, Charles Blenzig, Hal Galper, Steve Wilson, Doug Weiss, David Dejesus and others.  He is preparing to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in the spring.  Gregory performs in the Albany and New York City areas and is the recent winner of the 2014 Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition.
