Jay Shankar is a Senior at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University studying under Professor Eugene Mondie. He is currently a James Backas Memorial Scholar at The Peabody Institute. He has had 15 years of clarinet training and plans to pursue a career in professional orchestra. He has been invited to play with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra for Summer Fest and Winter Pops multiple times. He has performed as the Principal Clarinetist in several youth orchestras as well including the National Youth Orchestra of Carnegie Hall in 2016 (conductors: Valery Gergiev & Christoph Eschenbach). In 2017 summer, he participated in the Immanuel and Olshan Texas Music Festival and was awarded 3rd place in the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Young Artist Concerto Competition. In 2015, he participated in the Tanglewood Institute Summer Program. He has had Master Classes with several famous currently active clarinetists such as Michael Wayne, Ricardo Morales, Boris Allakhverdyan, John Yeh, and Burt Hara and has had additional studies with Emil Khudyev.
