Maria Torres-Melgares is a Spanish saxophonist who is currently pursuing a Master of Music in saxophone performance at the University of Michigan, as well as a Certificate in Arts Entrepreneurship and Leadership and a DEI Certificate. Torres has collaborated with orchestras such as the New World Symphony Orchestra, in Miami, and the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, in Michigan. She has received numerous prizes in international competitions such as the 1st Prize of the “Festival Internacional de Saxofones de Palmela 2021”, Portugal; 1st Prize of the Elise Hall Competition for Emerging Saxophonists 2021, US; 1st Prize of the “94th Concours International LĂ©opold Bellan 2020”, France; and the Hans-Schaeuble Award 2019, Switzerland, among others. Previous to studying at the University of Michigan, she graduated from the “Conservatori Superior del Liceu” in Barcelona with a Bachelor’s degree in saxophone performance with the support of the prestigious Ferrer-Salat Foundation’s Young Promises and Excellence scholarships.
